Google Developers urges businesses not to make the mistake of creating a mobile-only formatted site that juts looks good on a smartphone. Remember, a mobile friendly site must be functional, easily navigable and load quickly.

A responsive web design is the way to go where each page uses the same code and URL whether the user is on a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone, says Google Developers. This design allows just one website to be developed and maintained that will respond or adjust to various screen sizes. There is no need to design multiple websites to fit different screens.

According to Google Developers, one company using the responsive web design format experienced an increase of 11% more page visits on their site per visit and mobile conversions grew by 51%.

Web designs should be easily navigable with a thumb or index finger. A cluttered or hard-to-read mobile site can quickly frustrate a visitor that could lead to a lost customer. Since video is an important feature on a site and more mobile users watch videos on the phones, videos should load quickly and play smoothly.

Smartphone users are typically engaging with mobile websites and apps while watching TV, commuting to work, and even using another computer. As mentioned earlier, websites that are not usable on a smartphone will suffer in search rankings.
  3. Better Brand Engagement – By offering a satisfying mobile experience, people will return to your website on a desktop. Some 90% of users report moving between devices to accomplish a task. If your mobile site proves balky, potential customers will go elsewhere.
  4. Increased conversions – Desktop websites on a mobile device just don’t work correctly – calls to action (CTA) are difficult to click and pages can be awkward to navigate. Remember, mobile shoppers have little patience for an unwieldy website. Eighty percent of consumers say they are more likely to buy from and interact with a brand that offers an engaging mobile experience.
  5. Reduce Your Bounce Rate – Content that looks great on a desktop might be unreadable on mobile. If a visitor has to squint, pinch or zoom to read small type, they won’t be staying on the site for long.

  • Does it load in less than three seconds?
  • Does it draw your eye to your key selling points or messages?

A faster web site means a better visitor experience, says Copybloggercom. A slow website will lead to a poor user experience, a growing bounce rate and a decrease in page views. As a result, you will lose money.

According to Strange Loop, a group of technology developers and builders, a one second delay can cost you 7% in sales. If you earn $1000 a month from the site, you would be losing $70. That adds up quickly during the year.

What makes a website slow? Large images or graphics, too many ads, incompatible browsers and apps can slow down loading times. To optimize speed, minimize the content of pages, reduce the size of images and change the image format, utilize caching instead of dynamic pages and enable gzip compression that reduces the size of the HTTP response.

These tags will boost both engagement and traffic to your website. Tags are used to help classify content that search engines can understand. Title tag – These are used by search engines to determine the topic of an article. Although Google has shifted to a more semantic search formula, a title tag is still important since search engines compare it to the content on the page.

Header tags – These refer to the HTML used to distinguish headings and subheadings from other types of text within the content of an article. Meta descriptions – Moz describes these as HTML attributes that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages. Meta descriptions are commonly used on search engine result pages (SERPs) to display preview snippets for a given page. These are important for gaining user clicks.

Image tags – Search engines can’t “see” your photo or image, but it can read its description. That’s where the image tag comes in. The tag should include a brief, concise description of the image.

Blog post tags – These are part of the website’s taxonomy used by blogging platforms to classify information. Let’s say you have an article about home improvement. Instead of using broad terms as “designing a new kitchen,” you should use such specific tags as “new cabinets” or “flooring” if the article refers to these.
